Awesome full guide of the Yorkshire Terriers
Yorkshire Terriers Guide. Although they are small in stature, they are a multi-talented breed. Commonly referred to as the “Yorkie”, this is an energetic, smart, athletic, and feisty dog.
Although Yorkies are small and light enough to sit on your lap, don’t be misled to think that they should be content to sit on your lap all day. You are getting a true terrier, bred to be a hunter and killer of small vermin like rats and mice. They can play fetch for hours, shine in dog sports, and excel at obedience.
Yorkshire Terriers’ Unique characteristics
- Tiny dogs – They usually weigh between five to seven pounds when fully grown. Their size make them more fragile and everything, including walks and playtimes, must be tailored to their size.
- Always affectionate – They are very loving, very demonstrative, and love to cuddle.
- Tiny hunters – Yorkies were originally hunting dogs and retain those instincts. They chase and hunt cats, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, or other small pets.
- Protective and courageous – They bark ferociously when someone approaches their yard, house, car, or person. They can’t back up that bark with action, but Yorkies don’t seem to realize that.
- Attitude is everything – Yorkies have a very regal attitude with their head led high, ears up, and coat flowing behind. This attitude is what earned them the name “King of Terriers”.
- Intelligent and obedient – They are very intelligent, and sometimes, too intelligent. Yorkies are smart enough to get bored, so training must be innovative and fun.
- The manipulative Yorkie – They are very good at manipulating their owners. Yorkies know how cute they are and how well they are loved, and they use that to their advantage.
